Nigeria President, Muhammadu Buhari has renamed the National Stadium in Abuja after late politician, Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.

Chief Abiola was the acclaimed winner of the Presidential election held on June 12, 1993 but he died while in custody of the then-military government of Nigeria.

During his speech on the Democracy Day – a day that commemorates the June 12 election, President Buhari made the pronouncement that the Ogun State-born philanthropist will be immortalised with the sports edifice in Abuja.

The National Stadium in Abuja becomes the second stadium to be renamed after Abiola, after the 35,000-capacity MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta that serves as home ground for Gateway United.
