Kenya and Ethiopia dominate Abeokuta 10km race
Kenya’s Biwott Kemboi is the winner of the maiden edition of the Abeokuta 10km race after finishing in 28 minutes and 76 seconds.
The 21-year-old beat off competition from over 3,000 athletes to win the star prize of $5,000 while Ethiopia duo Rotich John and Alemneh Tegene came second and third respectively. Nigeria’s Emmanuel Gyang finished fourth with 31 minutes and three seconds.
Gyang also won himself one million naira after becoming the first person to cross the finish line in the indigenous category for male competitors while Fadekemi Olude went home with the same prize after becoming the first Nigerian woman to finish the race in 37 minutes and 29 seconds.
In the female category, Ethiopia’s Tadu Redbone Nare clinched the $5,000 cheque after clocking the 33 minutes and 43 seconds. Kenya duo Cheptoeck Careen and Nancy Jesang followed in the second and third positions respectively.
