Coronavirus: Ogun State Police ready to arrest face mask violators
The Ogun State Police Command has vowed to arrest and prosecute anybody moving around the state without wearing a face mask.
Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, had earlier ordered residents of the state to wear face masks in public, while cab drivers and motorcycle riders were instructed to prune the number of their passengers to three and one respectively.
In a statement issued by the police spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, the command has deployed officers across the state to arrest violators of the government’s directives on social distancing and use of face masks.
Oyeyemi stated that the state Commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson, ordered the command to impound any vehicle, tricycle or motorcycle caught carrying more than the required passengers in violation of COVID-19 containment protocols.
“The Ogun State Police Command has observed with dismay the flagrant disobedience to the government directives which made it compulsory for everybody to always put on face masks when moving around within the state in order to mitigate the spread of the deadly coronavirus also known as COVID-19, ” Oyeyemi said per Punch.
“The command also observed that commercial vehicles and motorcycles are still in the habit of overloading their vehicles with passengers thereby disobeying the directive on social/physical distancing which is capable of jeopardizing the efforts of the government in the war against COVID-19 pandemic.”
